Liberals led us into ruin

With all this talk about the tariff war and how we are led to believe Trump is the problem, let me remind everyone (especially those with TDS — Trump derangement syndrome) that Canada’s economy was in the toilet long before Trump even got elected president for the second time and initiated this tariff nonsense. And that, my friends, is because of the cancerous Liberal government here in Canada. Trump isn’t helping matters with his tariffs, but the Liberals are 100% at fault here for the abysmal state of our economy. Not to mention the crime — that’s a whole other story, and not a good one at that.

Long-ballot ridiculous

Regarding the election in Battle River-Crowfoot where Pierre Poilievre is running. The ballot now has over 140 names. Socialists say this is a sign of engagement. This is nonsense and we all know it. Poilievre suggests all candidates should get at least 1,000 signatures for eligibility; I would go further. Candidates in any election should get a minimum 1% of the eligible voters in the riding. Also, they should have completed 100 hours of recognized community or public service. Legally we can’t demand a monetary deposit, so we need another form of commitment. These suggestions speak to effort, not money. It’s not unreasonable to expect a candidate to walk the neighbourhoods, knock on doors to get a measly 1% of voters’ signatures. It encourages interactions and some knowledge of the community’s needs. Otherwise, we get abuse of the system and voters. This is what’s happening in Battle River-Crowfoot.

Rein in spending

The ‘City Surplus’ column by Rick Bell is excellent. As he states, this is another $22M that ratepayers will never see again. Another 20M-plus dollars we will not see is the Carbon Tax plus 5% GST. It is a cost that is built into our utilities, operating, and capital budgets. We are shareholders of Enmax, but they do not show the Carbon Tax and GST on said tax in their reporting. It would be a substantial amount as the co-gen power plants use natural gas. The City has run a surplus for eight years now, which would work out to 40% of the current total budget year. It is always the same council members and city administration all bare fault in not returning these funds or reducing the mill rate. We are not looking at coffee money like the return from the provincial government was referred to. Enough is enough.
