Letters to the Editor, July 13, 2025: ‘Wildfire letter just hot air’

I guess that fentanyl is not the only thing that Americans are worried about crossing their border. The governors of Wisconsin and Illinois have sent a letter to Canada claiming that their people are having a hard time breathing the amount of smoke that is coming from our wildfires. I wonder if they assume Canada has the power to control the wind. Instead of complaining about the smoke, perhaps it would be to their benefit to send volunteer firefighters to help bring the fires under control; that way, the fires may be extinguished earlier, and they can quit huffing and puffing.

(Huffing and puffing is a national pastime down that way.)

Teachers deserve respect

Response to Mark Williams’ ‘Get it done right’ letter. It sounds like he is bashing teachers and our education system. My daughter is a vice-principal in a local elementary school here in our town. She puts in very long hours on a daily basis.I would challenge Mr. Williams to spend a week in one of her classrooms and then comment on how left-wing they are and how poorly the teaching is being done. These men and women work very hard at educating our youth under sometimes very trying circumstances.

(A very difficult job, indeed. And one of the most important as well)

More chances?

Sure, a lot of people are asking to give Canada and Carney a chance. Where the heck have you been? I remember the ’80s and the NEP. We have been giving the Canadian government chances since then. In the ’90s, the Reform Party gained official opposition party status with the slogan “The West Wants In.” That was 30 years ago. Are we in? Since that time, we have had a majority Conservative government with Harper, who, along with Jason Kenney, tweaked the equalization payments to appease the east instead of abolishing it to the delight of their base in the west so they would have any hope of being re-elected. Chances, chances? No more chances. The time for chances is gone. It’s time for action, it’s time for real change, and the time for independence is now. Don’t let this opportunity pass us by. Give Alberta a chance for a change instead of giving Canada or the prime minister yet another chance and another and another and another like we have in the past 40 years.

BILL GRANT

(This time, for sure.)
